Did you know the female bees do not lay eggs only the Queen bee can do this. The male bees primary function is to impregnate the Queen bee and eat honey. It is very interesting to know that the bees themselves do a lot to winterise themselves.

My Tips on Beekeeping Equipment!

If you are interested in taking up beekeeping & are a little short on money then, used beekeeping equipment can be a good option.
Don’t start improvising or leaving out some important equipment because you are financially embarrassed.
In the beginning , it may not be a nice suggestion, but workable nevertheless.
Some established beekeepers will tell you that the bees prefer the older & used beehives rather than brand new ones.

When you know exactly what you need > make a listThe net is always the best place to start for plenty of people, but be careful there are some very dodgy people on the net who will peddle you anything to make money.
That said, visit the sites or apiary in the event you are uncertain & check out the equipment for yourself.
I would recommend you begin by checking the local directories for suppliers who are selling used beekeeping equipment.
Always make sure that they are registered by the local apiary authorities. Local beekeeping clubs could also give you some very good recommendations & contacts.

These are people that could put you in touch with beekeepers that may be downsizing or looking to buy new equipment.
That means the newsletters & publications may be a great place to look for any ads of members selling off some of their equipment. As with all pastimes there will be times when people decide to throw in the towel and sell of their equipment. When you hear of people doing this, you need to be on the ball and find out what is on offer.

You need to be very careful when buying second hand equipment such as bee hives and make sure they have been properly sterilized. They could have been infested with illnesses in the past & not properly sterilized.
Always try to find out why they are selling it & though this may be difficult, at least ask for some kind of inspection certification & later, if possible a guarantee.
Illness in the hive can be very annoying as it usually ends up killing the bees. Some of the diseases that are hard to detect include the deadly black queen cell virus which will kill the queen, the acute paralysis virus, Kashmir bee virus.
As for the pests, it might be an idea to see the signs of such pests as the varroa mites. This might be a bit difficult for a beginner, but it is information that can save you a great deal, I did tell you to get brand new equipment if possible.

Always check the equipment to make sure it is not defective or damaged. There are individuals who could basically try to sell you equipment that is either not as good anymore, or just does not work. Finally, watch the amount of money you spend. Finally compare the price of the used equipment to the new ones to make sure you don’t pay less but in the long run will end up paying more as a result of having to replace it in a short space of time.
